Why this meaning was chosen

Quran-internal review covered the sole occurrence of the masculine noun كَثِيب at 73:14. On the day when the earth and mountains convulse, the mountains become the target noun qualified by مَهِيل, a loose, collapsing state. Transformation from solid mountains into a mound of granular material, together with the looseness predicate, establishes a sand mound or dune-like heap. The target is indefinite masculine accusative singular as the predicate of كَانَتِ.
