Quran-internal lexical rationale
Why this wording
To recognize a benefit or good act with a positive response.
Appreciation joins recognition of good with a positive response. At 4:147, people are grateful and God is appreciative; these are different grammatical and contextual expressions of the same core. Appreciation does not imply that God needs a benefit (27:40; 31:12). At 17:19 and 76:22, effort is appreciated: the passive form describes what receives appreciation, not a grateful agent.
Where other meanings fail: 'grateful' cannot replace every form, because 'grateful effort' reverses the passive relation at 17:19 and 76:22. 'Reward' is too narrow as the complete meaning: 76:9 names recompense and gratitude separately, and 31:14 calls for gratitude to God and parents without specifying repayment. 'Say thanks only' is too restrictive, because 34:13 connects gratitude with work. The existing 'acknowledge good' with a favorable response remains a viable near-equivalent, not a failed meaning.
The distinct shākir and shakūr forms retain separate grammatical rules. For shakūr, 'grateful' and 'appreciative' preserve cautious familiar wording; an English degree adverb such as 'deeply' is not forced. How best to express the intensive or dispositional pattern remains open research. The passive 'appreciated' and the noun 'gratitude' remain distinct from active descriptions.
