Quran-internal lexical rationale

One operation across the family

This is not context changing the meaning. It is one spatial-relational operation, with morphology determining whether an occurrence names movement, a participant, a relationship, or a boundary-place.

The invariant is advance beyond: move or extend beyond a reference boundary toward its other side. In 2:229, God's limits supply the boundary. In 18:28, the eyes are told not to advance beyond the people in view. Neither occurrence requires hostility or moral wrongdoing as part of the root itself.

Morphology then selects what is being named. The participant noun عَدُوّ is an opponent, one positioned on the opposing side. The relational noun عَدَاوَة is opposition, the relation between such sides. The place noun عُدْوَة is a boundary-side; in 8:42, the terrain construction supplies the practical gloss bank. These are not four contextual meanings pasted onto one root. They are four profiles of the same relation.

The opening of section 100 supplies another clean control. ٱلْعَادِيَات names the advancing ones, while ضَبْحًا separately supplies panting. Rendering the root itself as charging, racing, hostile, or transgressing would import information carried elsewhere in the construction.

QuranGraph therefore renders شيطان as adversary and عدو as opponent. The former names an adversarial role; the latter profiles a participant on the opposing side. A clause such as إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَانَ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ can consequently retain both words without collapsing them into an English repetition: the adversary is an opponent to you.
