scriptural comparison
Why one cover family is retained
The Quranic forms are kept under one cover core even where conventional renderings differ sharply. Gospel passages are included only as supporting comparison: they show why an afflicting participant should not automatically be collapsed into one possible symptom.
The decisive evidence is Quranic and exact-form based. All ten جِنَّة occurrences retain concealed beings. Five describe the concealed class directly; five occur inside accusations about a messenger. Translating the latter five as an abstract mental condition would let the surrounding accusation replace the identity of the same vocalized word.
The seven جَانّ occurrences likewise retain concealed being. In 27:10 and 28:31, تَهْتَزُّ supplies the quivering and كَأَنَّهَا marks likeness. Parallel accounts can identify the narrated event, but they cannot turn this exact noun into serpent. The comparison is allowed to remain unsettling rather than being normalized by inherited expectation.
The Gospel comparison supports this restraint without governing the Arabic. In Mark 9, Jesus addresses the afflicting spirit and commands it to leave the sufferer. Matthew 4:24 lists those afflicted by demons separately from people with diseases, seizures, and paralysis. John 10:20 coordinates the claims that Jesus has a demon and that he raves, rather than using one statement as a lexical definition of the other.
These passages do not prove what the Quranic beings are. They provide a comparative reason not to reduce an alleged agent or participant to madness. The Quranic form inventory remains the controlling evidence, and no later interpretive literature is used in the lexical decision.

Where other meanings fail
madness
7:184
أَوَلَمْ يَتَفَكَّرُوا۟ مَا بِصَاحِبِهِم مِّن جِنَّةٍ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ
Alternative: Do they not reflect? Their companion has no madness; he is only a clear warner.
Research rendering: Do they not reflect? There are no concealed beings with their companion; he is only a clear warner.
The exact vocalized word جِنَّة also denotes concealed beings in 37:158 and 114:6. Turning that same word into an abstract condition only in the accusation passages changes its lexical identity to fit the context.
serpent
27:10
وَأَلْقِ عَصَاكَ فَلَمَّا رَءَاهَا تَهْتَزُّ كَأَنَّهَا جَآنٌّ وَلَّىٰ مُدْبِرًا وَلَمْ يُعَقِّبْ يَٰمُوسَىٰ لَا تَخَفْ إِنِّى لَا يَخَافُ لَدَىَّ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ
Alternative: Then when he saw it quivering as though it were a serpent, he turned away in retreat.
Research rendering: Then when he saw it quivering as though it were a concealed being, he turned away in retreat.
تَهْتَزُّ already supplies the quivering and كَأَنَّهَا explicitly marks a comparison. A parallel passage may identify the event, but it cannot replace the exact جَانّ word with a different noun.
