cross scriptural correspondence

Why the sea command does not require 'strike'

Quran 26:63 gives the command involving the staff and then states the result: فَٱنفَلَقَ, 'so it split.' Exodus 14 describes the corresponding act as raising the staff and extending the hand over the sea; it never states a blow or contact between the staff and the water.

In the Quranic clause, بِّعَصَاكَ supplies the staff relation and ٱلْبَحْرَ the affected domain. The next clause states the result, فَٱنفَلَقَ — so it split. Rendering ٱضْرِب as 'strike' adds physical impact that neither the result clause nor the verb's other Quranic constructions independently specifies.

Exodus 14:16 uses הָרֵם אֶת־מַטְּךָ, raise your staff; וּנְטֵה אֶת־יָדְךָ עַל־הַיָּם, extend your hand over the sea; and וּבְקָעֵהוּ, split it. Verse 21 reports that Moses extended his hand, God drove the sea by a strong east wind, and the waters split. The scene uses no נכה strike verb and does not say that the staff touched the water.

This earlier-scripture comparison corroborates rather than determines the QuranGraph meaning. Quran-internal tests already reject 'strike' as the family-wide core because ضرب also governs examples, movement through the earth, and a wall between groups. Exodus 14 adds a narrower point: even the sea episode does not require an imported blow. 'Press' preserves directed force or bearing without inventing contact.

Where other meanings fail

travel

2:26

Alternative: travel an example of a gnat

Research rendering: press an example of a gnat

The explicit example object rules out travel while preserving the same press operation used elsewhere.

strike

4:101

Alternative: when you strike in the land, you may shorten the devotion

Research rendering: when you press onward through the land, you may shorten the devotion

The fī-land construction supplies an extent through which the subject presses onward; physical striking cannot be the family core.

stamp

24:31

Alternative: Let them not stamp with their feet so that their concealed adornment becomes known.

Research rendering: Let them not press the covering close against their legs, so that what they conceal of their adornment becomes known.

The verse has already supplied covering, concealment, and what becomes apparent. Quranic ellipsis permits the covering to remain understood; the legs are its relational ground, not an impacting foot action.

set forth

26:63

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰٓ أَنِ ٱضْرِب بِّعَصَاكَ ٱلْبَحْرَ فَٱنفَلَقَ فَكَانَ كُلُّ فِرْقٍ كَٱلطَّوْدِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

Alternative: set forth with your staff against the sea

Research rendering: press the sea with your staff

The staff and sea supply the directed relation, and the following result clause states that the sea split. 'Set forth' cannot carry this operation.

present

43:5

أَفَنَضْرِبُ عَنكُمُ ٱلذِّكْرَ صَفْحًا أَن كُنتُمْ قَوْمًا مُّسْرِفِينَ

Alternative: shall We present the reminder away from you

Research rendering: shall We press the reminder away from you

The ʿan phrase supplies the away-vector while the verb retains press.

hit

57:13

Alternative: a wall was hit between them

Research rendering: a wall was pressed between them

Passive voice and bayna specify the interval into which the wall was pressed; damage to the wall is not expressed.
