Why this meaning was chosen
Quran-internal review covered both occurrences of the plural أَزْلَام. In 5:3 they are the instrument used with the Form X command تَسْتَقْسِمُوا, establishing a practice of seeking an apportioned decision; in 5:90 they are grouped with intoxicants, gambling, and cult stones as defilement from Satan's work to be avoided. These passages establish prohibited decision-lots but do not themselves describe the object's material form.
