2:276

يَمْحَقُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلرِّبَوٰا۟ وَيُرْبِى ٱلصَّدَقَٰتِ وَٱللَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ أَثِيمٍ

3:141

وَلِيُمَحِّصَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَيَمْحَقَ ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ

Why this meaning was chosen

Both targets are form I imperfect verbs with God as subject. Usury is set against the growth of charitable gifts in 2:276, while the disbelievers are set against the refining of believers in 3:141. The objects differ, but each undergoes complete destructive removal.
