Where other meanings fail
Jewish
3:67
مَا كَانَ إِبْرَٰهِيمُ يَهُودِيًّا وَلَا نَصْرَانِيًّا وَلَٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفًا مُّسْلِمًا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ
Alternative: Abraham was neither Jewish nor Christian, but he was Jewish, submitting, and not among the associators
Research rendering: Abraham was neither Jewish nor Christian, but he was exclusively God-directed, submitting, and not among the associators
The verse explicitly denies the Jewish predicate immediately before applying the target adjective.
associators
22:31
حُنَفَآءَ لِلَّهِ غَيْرَ مُشْرِكِينَ بِهِۦ وَمَن يُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ فَكَأَنَّمَا خَرَّ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَتَخْطَفُهُ ٱلطَّيْرُ أَوْ تَهْوِى بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ فِى مَكَانٍ سَحِيقٍ
Alternative: associators for God, not associating anything with Him
Research rendering: exclusively God-directed for God, not associating anything with Him
The plural target is positively directed to God and immediately restated as the opposite of association.
Abrahamic
98:5
وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓا۟ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلْقَيِّمَةِ
Alternative: they were commanded only to worship God, making religion sincere for Him, Abrahamic
Research rendering: they were commanded only to worship God, making religion sincere for Him, exclusively God-directed
The collective instruction contains no Abraham referent; its explicit constraints are worship of God and sincere religion for Him.
