فَأَعْرَضُوا۟ فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَيْلَ ٱلْعَرِمِ وَبَدَّلْنَٰهُم بِجَنَّتَيْهِمْ جَنَّتَيْنِ ذَوَاتَىْ أُكُلٍ خَمْطٍ وَأَثْلٍ وَشَىْءٍ مِّن سِدْرٍ قَلِيلٍ

Why this meaning was chosen

The sole target is a definite genitive noun in the construct سَيْلَ ٱلْعَرِمِ. The replacement of two productive gardens with inferior growth proves the flood's devastating effect, while all seven aligned recitation witnesses preserve the same construction. The Quran-internal evidence does not independently identify the genitive noun's more specific physical referent.
