Research rendering: When it brightened what was around him, God went with their illumination.
The relative expression 'what was around him' is the verb's direct object. Shine makes the clause intransitive and leaves that expressed object without a governing verb; brightened preserves the construction while keeping ضوأ distinct from نور illumination.
