Where other meanings fail
inevitably
2:216
Alternative: you inevitably dislike a thing and it is good for you, and inevitably love a thing and it is harmful
Research rendering: you may well dislike a thing that is good for you, and may well love a thing that is harmful
The paired construction reopens both human evaluations; it does not assert that every disliked or liked thing has the opposite value.
past likelihood
7:185
Alternative: their term was likely to have already drawn near
Research rendering: their term may well already have drawn near
Formal perfect morphology on عسى does not locate the modal in past time; the complement's قد اقترب supplies the relevant state.
certainty
12:21
Alternative: he will certainly benefit us and we will certainly take him as a child
Research rendering: he may well benefit us, or we may take him as a child
The buyer keeps two household outcomes open and the following narrative does not turn both into assertions of realization.
beneficial prospect only
47:22
Alternative: a beneficial prospect that you corrupt the land and sever kinship
Research rendering: a live adverse prospect that you may corrupt the land and sever kinship
The same modal introduces explicitly condemned conduct, so positive value is not lexical.
hope
47:22
Alternative: do you hope, if you turn away, to corrupt the land and sever your kinship
Research rendering: are you likely, if you turn away, to corrupt the land and sever your kinship
The interrogative is a warning challenge about adverse conduct, not an expression of desire.
