وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍ
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِى عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًا قُلْنَا يَٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّآ أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّآ أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًا
Why this meaning was chosen
The three creation passages name the material حَمَإ within the sequence of sounding clay formed from altered sediment; 18:86 derives the feminine adjective حَمِئَة for a spring characterized by that material. Among the seven aligned witnesses, Shubah reads حَامِيَة at 18:86, describing heat under a different root, while the other aligned witnesses preserve the target's mud-derived adjective. That recitational contrast is recorded here without assigning heat to the frozen حمأ target.
