ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ

قَالَا رَبَّنَآ إِنَّنَا نَخَافُ أَن يَفْرُطَ عَلَيْنَآ أَوْ أَن يَطْغَىٰ
كُلُوا۟ مِن طَيِّبَٰتِ مَا رَزَقْنَٰكُمْ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِيهِ فَيَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبِى وَمَن يَحْلِلْ عَلَيْهِ غَضَبِى فَقَدْ هَوَىٰ
مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْمِيزَانِ
إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَا ٱلْمَآءُ حَمَلْنَٰكُمْ فِى ٱلْجَارِيَةِ
ٱذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُۥ طَغَىٰ

Quran-internal lexical rationale
Why 'overreach' rather than 'transgress'?
'Transgress' normally presents a moral agent breaking a known rule. 'Overreach' retains the wider Quranic pattern: something goes beyond its proper range, measure, authority, or extent.
That wider core is visible where moral law-breaking is impossible. In 69:11 the water طَغَا, exceeding its ordinary extent; in 53:17 sight neither turned aside nor طَغَى, passing beyond its proper range. The same wording governs the balance in 55:8, human conduct in 20:81, and Pharaoh in 79:17. 'Overreach' therefore keeps one boundary-crossing action across physical extent, perception, measure, conduct, and power. A context may make the overreach a transgression, but transgression is a consequence or evaluation, not the invariant lexical core.
