research note

Why this wording

To be overcome by water through submersion.

The water-specific lexeme covers exactly 22 occurrences. Form IV supplies causation; voice, aspect and construction distinguish drowned, drowning, will be drowned, drown and were drowned. At 11:43 drowned is a nominal passive result, not the active perfect verb. The definition does not require every occurrence to report completed death.

Where other meanings fail: Generic overwhelm loses the water-specific contrast with stones, a cry and the earth swallowing at 29:40; this is under-specification, not a logical contradiction. Merely immerse or submerge does not express being overcome at 11:43. A uniformly future-oriented destined to be drowned fails the completed-result construction at 11:43, although 11:37, 23:27 and 44:24 announce a prospective outcome.

Still open: The differently vocalized غَرْقًا at 79:1 remains outside this accepted scope. Its relation to the water lexeme is unresolved; neither a literal water reading nor the existing penetrating-force interpretation is accepted here. Witness-specific he/We at 17:69 is preserved separately from the shared lexical operation.
