Why this wording
A violent, characteristically thunderous shock or blast overwhelms active capacity; context determines whether the result is fear, collapse, death, or later recovery.
All 11 صعق occurrences are covered by one accepted lexical core, including the plural noun at 2:19 and the singular noun at 2:55. The core is not death, thunder, or lightning alone; it is a violent, characteristically thunderous shock or blast that overwhelms active capacity. Local context supplies fear, collapse, death, punishment, or later recovery.
Where other meanings fail: Thunder is already named separately in 2:19, so صَوَاعِق cannot simply mean thunder there. Death is the feared or possible result in some contexts, but 7:143 narrates Moses recovering after falling overwhelmed, so irreversible death cannot be the invariant. Lightning-struck fails at 39:68, where the immediate trigger is the trumpet blast rather than atmospheric lightning.
Supporting scriptural context: The user-provided Torah/Sinai discussion supports a setting of terrifying cloud, fire, sound, and danger around direct encounter, but the Arabic decision remains Quran-internal. It is supporting context, not the definition authority.
