Quran-internal lexical rationale
Why the word remains sign
آيَة names something recognizable through which another reality becomes known. The referent can be an event, person, condition, created phenomenon, or recited unit; grammatical number alone supplies sign, signs, or two signs.
The Ark's arrival in 2:248 is a sign of sovereignty, the person in 2:259 is made a sign for people, and creation, languages, and colors in 30:22 are signs. In each case, the named thing makes a reality beyond itself recognizable. That same operation survives when the referent is a communicated unit, as in the signs recited in 2:252 and the signs within the Writ in 3:7.
Verse is therefore a scriptural application, not the lexical core. It cannot name the Ark's arrival, a person, or created human differences. Miracle is also too narrow because many signs are communicated or observable markers rather than extraordinary events. Proof is stronger than the noun requires: a sign points and makes recognizable, but does not by itself force an observer's conclusion.
The exchange warning in 2:41 is illuminated by the Quran's own repeated construction. In 2:79, people write something and attribute it to God so as to acquire a little price. In 3:187, people conceal the Writ and acquire a little price by it. In 9:9, a little price is acquired by God's signs and is followed by barring from His way. The practical failure is therefore not limited to selling written text: it is taking a limited gain in exchange for compromising what makes God's communication known.
The current translation of the whole of 2:41 remains unchanged while its exchange grammar is reviewed separately. At word level, بِآيَاتِي contributes My signs without turning signs into verses, teachings, proofs, or a price.
Where other meanings fail
verse
2:248
Alternative: The verse of his sovereignty is that the Ark should come to you.
Research rendering: The sign of his sovereignty is that the Ark should come to you.
The promised event is the arrival of the Ark. Calling that event a verse imposes a textual unit where the passage identifies a recognizable sign.
verse
2:259
Alternative: We will make you a verse for the people.
Research rendering: We will make you a sign for the people.
The person and what happens to him become recognizable to other people. A human referent cannot be reduced to a textual verse.
miracle
3:7
Alternative: From the Writ are decisive miracles; they are the foundation of the Writ, and others are similar.
Research rendering: From the Writ are decisive signs; they are the foundation of the Writ, and others are similar.
The noun identifies communicated units within the Writ. Miracle narrows the family to extraordinary events, while sign covers both these units and observable phenomena.
verse
30:22
وَمِنْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ خَلْقُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱخْتِلَٰفُ أَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَلْوَٰنِكُمْ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَٰتٍ لِّلْعَٰلِمِينَ
Alternative: Among His verses are the creation of the heavens and earth and the variation of your languages and colors.
Research rendering: Among His signs are the creation of the heavens and earth and the variation of your languages and colors.
Created realities and observable human differences are the referents. Sign works here and also when the referent is a recited unit; verse does not.
