classical derivational bridge
Why 'Sustainer' and 'sustain' belong together
The corpus files رَبّ under ربب and رَبَّى under ربو because their visible conjugations differ. Classical Arabic also explicitly recognizes رَبَّى as a softened form of رَبَّبَ, so the graph records both analyses against the two exact verb occurrences and preserves their sustaining-care relation.
In 17:24, رَبِّ is a noun: 'my Sustainer.' Later in the verse, رَبَّيَانِي says 'they sustained me': the verb carries the sustain core, the dual ending identifies the two parents, and the final suffix means 'me.' In 26:18, نُرَبِّكَ likewise composes as 'we sustain you.'
Ibn Fāris records two sound analyses of رَبَّى: it may express caused growth from ربو, or it may come from the تربيب family of ربب. Lisān al-ʿArab is more explicit, placing رَبَّاه under ربب and describing it as a conversion of the doubled consonant in رَبَّبَ. Arabic preserves the same kind of accepted alternation in أَمْلَلْتُ/أَمْلَيْتُ, دَسَّسَ/دَسَّى, and صَدَّدَ/صَدَّى. Sībawayh warns that this is an attested but non-productive alternation, so it supports this documented case without licensing arbitrary root mergers.
The graph therefore keeps the imported ربب and ربو root nodes separate, because the wider ربو family also covers increase, elevation, swelling, and financial increment. It gives the exact two رَبَّى verb occurrences two documented derivational analyses and accepts sustain for those occurrences. This makes the test symmetrical: 'My Sustainer ... as they sustained me' preserves one core, while 'My Lord ... as they lorded me' does not. Lord is therefore rejected as a QuranGraph rendering of رَبّ, not retained as a contextual alternative. The invariant is referent-neutral: parents perform the sustaining action in 17:24, Pharaoh's household claims it in 26:18, and the human court figures called رَبّ in Surah Yusuf can occupy the same Sustainer relation. Context identifies who fills the relation and how the clause is constructed; it does not replace the lexical core with 'master' for a human and 'Sustainer' for God.
The Quranic Arabic Corpus (QAC) supplies the grammatical labels used by this graph. It places the noun رَبّ in the ربب family and the verb رَبَّى in the ربو family because رَبَّى has the regular visible shape of a weak-final Form II verb. That is a useful filing decision about how the word conjugates; it is not proof that the words are unrelated. The app's normalized ربي lookup bucket also contains رِبِّيُّونَ after vowel marks are removed, so the bridge is attached only to the two exact verb segments, not to every item in that search bucket. The normalized رب lookup bucket creates two further collisions: the 30:39 financial noun رِبًا and the rootless particle رُبَّ inside رُبَّمَا at 15:2. Both are excluded from the accepted Sustainer scope, which now contains the 975 segments rooted in ربب; each excluded segment remains traceable in its own review scope.

Where other meanings fail
Lord
17:24
وَٱخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ ٱلذُّلِّ مِنَ ٱلرَّحْمَةِ وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًا
Alternative: And say, "My Lord, show them nurturing care as they lorded me when I was small."
Research rendering: And say, "My Sustainer, show them nurturing care as they sustained me when I was small."
The verse deliberately places رَبِّ beside رَبَّيَانِي. Classical Arabic recognizes رَبَّى both as caused growth from ربو and as a softened form of رَبَّبَ from ربب. Testing both sides with the same English core gives Sustainer/sustained, while Lord/lorded changes care for dependent life into domination. The imported QAC roots remain separate for morphology, but that filing choice does not erase the attested derivational bridge.
Lord
26:18
قَالَ أَلَمْ نُرَبِّكَ فِينَا وَلِيدًا وَلَبِثْتَ فِينَا مِنْ عُمُرِكَ سِنِينَ
Alternative: Did we not lord you among us as a newborn, and you remained among us for years of your life?
Research rendering: Did we not sustain you among us as a newborn, and you remained among us for years of your life?
The second Quranic رَبَّى verb again describes prolonged care from infancy. 'Lord you' cannot carry that relation in English; 'sustain you' preserves the same core accepted for رَبّ without importing a different action.
