Why this meaning was chosen

Quran-internal review covered the sole occurrence of the noun طَوْد at 26:63. When the sea splits for Moses, each separated part is compared to the target noun qualified by ٱلْعَظِيم. The parted water, comparison construction, and explicit greatness establish a huge upright mass. Because the noun occurs only as the comparator and is not independently described elsewhere in the Quran, the internal evidence does not fully decide whether English should lexicalize the physical referent specifically as mountain. The target is definite masculine genitive singular after comparative كَ.
