Where other meanings fail
certainty
4:157
Alternative: those who differed concerning him are in certainty about it
Research rendering: those who differed concerning him are in doubt about it
The passage denies their knowledge and contrasts the disputed claim with certainty later in the same verse.
knowledge
42:14
Alternative: those who inherited the Scripture after them are in disquieting knowledge about it
Research rendering: those who inherited the Scripture after them are in disquieting doubt about it
The verse separately says knowledge had come before the later division; substituting knowledge erases the stated epistemic contrast.
play
44:9
بَلْ هُمْ فِى شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ
Alternative: rather, they are in play, playing
Research rendering: rather, they are in doubt, playing
The following verb independently predicates play, so collapsing it into the noun destroys the two-part clause.
