Why this meaning was chosen
Quran-internal review covered both occurrences of قِرْطَاس and its broken plural قَرَاطِيس. In 6:7 a book is sent down in a tangible sheet that opponents could touch with their hands; in 6:91 the book brought by Moses is made into sheets, some displayed and much concealed. Tangibility, writing, and the division of a book across plural sheets establish one physical writing-support core. Number requires separate surface renderings but not separate lexical meanings. The aligned-reading field supplies no variant requiring a separate rule; no protected meaning was edited and no exact lexical collision was found.
