حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ فِى عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِندَهَا قَوْمًا قُلْنَا يَٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِمَّآ أَن تُعَذِّبَ وَإِمَّآ أَن تَتَّخِذَ فِيهِمْ حُسْنًا
قَالُوا۟ يَٰذَا ٱلْقَرْنَيْنِ إِنَّ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَهَلْ نَجْعَلُ لَكَ خَرْجًا عَلَىٰٓ أَن تَجْعَلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُمْ سَدًّا
Why this meaning was chosen
Generations are repeatedly created and destroyed as collective cohorts, قرين is a companion joined to someone, passive Form II binds people together, Form VIII places beings in company, and Form IV denies being a match for what was subjugated. The three dual nouns occur only inside the fixed designation Dhu al-Qarnayn; the Quran does not internally define the title's referent, so that exact set remains a proper-name specialization rather than an imported horn gloss.
