28:42

وَأَتْبَعْنَٰهُمْ فِى هَٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا لَعْنَةً وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ هُم مِّنَ ٱلْمَقْبُوحِينَ

Why this meaning was chosen

The sole target is a masculine plural Form I passive participle predicated of Pharaoh and his forces on the Day of Resurrection. Their curse in this world and their leading people into the Fire establish the participle as a state of condemned contempt rather than a merely physical description.
