فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلطُّوفَانَ وَٱلْجَرَادَ وَٱلْقُمَّلَ وَٱلضَّفَادِعَ وَٱلدَّمَ ءَايَٰتٍ مُّفَصَّلَٰتٍ فَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا مُّجْرِمِينَ

Why this meaning was chosen

The sole target is an accusative collective noun in the sequence of distinct signs sent against Pharaoh's people. The Quran-internal context establishes an infesting creature-affliction and its role as a sign but supplies no anatomical description that would warrant a narrower species label.
